BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Residents were evacuated from their homes Tuesday morning after a propane tank overturned in Burke County.
Police said the tanker was hauling 1,600 gallons of propane when it flipped over after the driver backed into a ditch on Maloney Avenue near Glen Alpine.

The driver escaped after kicking out the front windshield, according to witnesses.
Police said the tanker did not leak any propane, but they evacuated several homes nearby as a precaution.
“He just said there was enough gas in that thing that if it did blow, it would at least knock out all the windows in my house out,” neighbor Chenelle Brown said.
Two large wreckers were used to help set the propane tanker upright. The tanker is owned by Burke Oil.
Neighbors were allowed to return to their homes before noon Tuesday.
