CHARLOTTE — A Charlotte lawmaker is running for higher office. Democratic Representative Wesley Harris is announcing a run for state treasurer.
“Our state is overflowing with potential,” Harris said in a statement. “But to make opportunity accessible to every North Carolinian, we need a state government and we need a Treasurer who’s willing to invest in the most valuable asset we have: our people.”
Since 2018, Harris has represented District 105 in the state house. District 105 includes Ballantyne and Pineville. He is the only PhD economist in the North Carolina legislature.

“Public finance has always been near and dear to my heart and I saw firsthand what North Carolina can be at its best when we have a state that invests in our people and invests in our community,” he said.
Harris is the second member of the Mecklenburg delegation to announce a run for a Council of State position. Democratic State Senator Rachel Hunt is running for lieutenant governor.
No Republicans have declared for the state treasurer position. Incumbent State Treasurer Dale Folwell is a potential Republican candidate for North Carolina governor.
