Suspect arrested, charged in 2 Charlotte area bank robberies

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police arrested and charged a man Monday in connection with two bank robberies in Charlotte.

Detectives charged 30-year-old Kyle Kornegay with one count of attempted common law robbery and one count of common law robbery.

Detectives say Kornegay entered the State Employees Credit Union on University City Boulevard and handed a note demanding money.

The teller complied and Kornegay left the bank with the money.

The first robbery was just before 10:15 a.m.

Officials say after robbing the State Employees Credit Union, Kornegay attempted to rob a Bank of America on Beatties Ford Road.

Kornegay again passed a note to the teller demanding she give him money. Detectives say the teller called someone over to her and then Kornegay left the bank without money.

The attempted robbery at the Bank of America happened around 2:45 p.m.

Detectives say after the robberies, officers found the suspect vehicle and detained Kornegay and one other passenger.

It was later determined the additional passenger was not involved with either of the robberies. Officers arrested him for having an unrelated warrant for larceny.
