One shot in east Charlotte grocery store parking lot

CHARLOTTE — One person has been seriously hurt following a shooting in the parking lot of a grocery store in east Charlotte.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Compare Foods on Milton Road.

MEDIC said one person was taken to Atrium Main with life-threatening injuries.

Police haven’t said what led up to the shooting or if a suspect has been identified.

However, the shooting spanned two crime scenes, with one focusing on a white car in the parking lot of the grocery store.

Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura has covered crime in the area for years.

He spoke with employees and customers of Compare Foods, who said they were ready to avoid the area completely.

A resident, who goes by PJ, said she heard a few pops on Sharon Amity Road.

“Almost like a firecracker. I knew it was a gunshot, like pop, pop, pop, simultaneously,” PJ explained.

She said she then saw a man who was hurt in the middle of the street.

Alen Trinidad said he lives and goes to barber school in the area. He told Kustura that he was alarmed by the crime.

“Definitely not a place you want to hang out,” Trinidad said. “It makes me feel not safe. It makes me feel like I have to be more aware of where I’m at and maybe look over my shoulder more than I already have to.”

Crime maps show that there have been 38 reports of violent crime within a 1,500-foot radius of the Compare Foods in the past six months.
