CMPD said she was shot in the leg around 11 a.m. on Cherry Street near Charlottetowne Avenue and was taken to the hospital.
Investigators said a fight between two people known to each other led to the shooting. They quickly found the suspect and arrested him after he tried to run, just blocks away in the area of East Third Street and Kings Drive. The location isn’t far from the Midtown Target and several other restaurants and businesses.
The suspect, Khanahnai Coleman, was given a $100,000 bond in court on Thursday. He’d have to pay 10% of that to get out of jail and is ordered to be on electronic monitoring if he posts bond.
A shelter-in-place was issued for the Central campus of Central Piedmont Community College. They said CMPD told them it was issued as “they tried to apprehend a violent suspect.”
“I was really worried,” student Gigi Gandiaga told Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz.
“It’s nerve-wracking but at the same time, I’m glad I was out the way,” said student Ekoun Yao.
The two students were in class nearby and got alerts on their phones about the shelter-in-place order. That order was quickly lifted and police later confirmed the shooting didn’t happen on the community college’s campus.
Police were able to recover the suspect’s gun. A source told Sáenz that Coleman had thrown the gun into an alley.
Investigators aren’t looking for anyone else in connection to the shooting. Still, it’s unnerving for neighbors nearby, like Liz Roland and her dog Marley, who often play fetch in a field that was littered with evidence markers on Wednesday. A detective was also digging there for evidence.
“Makes you feel a little uneasy, but you always have to be vigilant and alert,” Roland said.
The students told Sáenz they are grateful for their campus security team and for CMPD, who they said clearly moved quickly to prevent the suspect from having the chance to get into a campus building.
