CHARLOTTE — One person has died following a collision in the University City area Wednesday morning, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred just before 3:30 a.m. on Interstate 85 near Mallard Creek Church Road.
Troopers said a vehicle was traveling north on I-85 when it ran off the right side of the road, entered the woodline, and collided with several trees before finally coming to a rest.

The driver, later identified as 52-year-old Lonny Alexander Earnhardt III, was partially ejected from the vehicle because he was not wearing a seatbelt.
Earnhardt died while on the way to the hospital, according to troopers.
The investigation into this collision remains ongoing.
