Showmars employee struck by stray bullet while cleaning tables in southwest Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — A Showmars employee is recovering at a hospital after she was struck by a stray bullet while working Saturday.

The worker was cleaning tables when the round came through the front window near closing time the Showmars on South Tryon Street near Steele Creek Road.

She was shot in the head and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said. The employee is stable.

A coworker hid under a table and a family eating dinner ran to the kitchen to find cover.

Witnesses told Channel 9 they never saw the gunman.

Police told us they believe the employee shot was an innocent bystander.

A spokesperson from Showmars sent Channel 9 an email that read, in part, “Showmars is working closely with CMPD to provide them with all the information they need but also to ensure employees and customers feel safe and secure moving forward.”

Showmars was closed Monday and it’s unclear when it will reopen.

Police have not identified a suspect at this time.
