CHARLOTTE — A GoFundMe account has raised more than $28,000 for a fifth-grade teacher who was shot during an attempted robbery while working part-time for Doordash.

Officers responded on Dec. 18, 2021, to the scene along Morehead Street near Dilworth Bar and Grill in Charlotte and found Bret Maksymik, who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

“It was devastating to hear,” parent Tavaris Baker said. “My son was very, very sad to hear about it.”

The GoFundMe account was created to help pay for Maksymik’s medical expenses. The teacher at Tega Cary Elementary School is expected to recover from his injuries.

No arrests have been made in the shooting and police have not released any other details about the crime.
