HICKORY, N.C. — A man was shot and killed by police after shooting into someone’s home and walking around the nearby area with a gun in his hand, according to the Hickory Police Department.

The incident happened Sunday just after midnight in a neighborhood on Fifth Avenue Southwest, just off Highway 321.

While there wasn’t much damage to the front of the home that was shot, Channel 9′s Glenn Counts was able to see at least six bullet holes in the back of the house.

Ge Moua and his daughter Valerie live in the neighborhood and heard the commotion from inside their home.

“When I kept hearing it go over and over like more than 20 times, I got really scared,” Valerie Moua told Counts, “so I was like it’s gunshots.”

Officers say they got multiple phone calls, and when they got to the neighborhood, they found the gunman, 27-year-old Timothy Craig Setzer Jr., walking around. When police confronted him, he ran.

During the chase, police say Setzer pulled a gun from his waistband, and they shot and killed him.

Martha Gomez, another resident who has lived in the neighborhood for three years, said this is the first time she’s seen any trouble and was surprised to find the police knocking on her door so early in the morning.

“At two in the morning, the police came; they were knocking on the door, and they asked me if I heard anything,” Gomez said.

Ge Moua told Counts that he too feels shaken up about something like this happening so close to his home.

“It’s terrifying to see that, because, like I said, it’s normally quiet here. For that to happen, especially that close to home, it’s very scary,” Ge Moua said.

Currently, law enforcement has not released the names of the officers involved or the number of officers who fired their weapons. Following standard practice, they have been placed on administrative leave.

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will be handling the investigation of the incident moving forward.
