CHARLOTTE — A passenger died in a single-vehicle crash in east Charlotte Tuesday morning, police said.
It happened around 5:45 a.m. on the inbound lanes of East Independence Boulevard near Albemarle Road. Police found a 2005 Chevrolet Express Van off the side of the road.

MEDIC said the front passenger of the van, 22-year-old Wilmer Noe Aguilera Lopez, died at the scene. The driver was taken to the hospital.
Police believe the driver was heading west on Independence Boulevard in the right turn only lane when the van hit the curb and lost control. It went off the side of the road and hit an overhead sign support beam.
Investigators don’t believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
