HICKORY, N.C. — A woman and her young son are dead after a police car crashed into their minivan during a police chase on Friday, officials say.

Police tried to pull over a motorcycle driving recklessly and without a license plate on Highway 70 near Fourth Street Southwest on Friday just after 10:30 p.m.

The motorcycle fled when the officer tried to pull it over, causing the police to chase it.

During the pursuit, a Honda Odyssey minivan drove into the intersection of Highway 70 and 13th Street and was hit by the officer, who investigators later identified as Officer Atia Mohamed Shamseldin, 24.

More officers tried to administer aid to the woman driving and the passenger, her son, before EMS and the Hickory Fire Department arrived.

The woman died at the scene and the boy was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, investigators said. On Sunday, troopers said the boy died from his injuries.

On Monday, troopers identified the woman as 38-year-old Cynthia Nicole Fox and her son as Michael Lail. The two were from Hickory. Cynthia’s mother said Michael was 13 years old.

Shamseldin and the passenger in the police vehicle were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers said the passenger was applying to work at the Hickory Police Department.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and has taken over the investigation.

Shamseldin is under investigation and is currently on administrative leave, highway patrol said.

The motorcycle continued to flee and officers are asking anyone with information about the motorcyclist’s identity to contact the NCSHP or the Hickory Police Department.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
