One dead, another hurt after car crash in northeast Charlotte, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — One person is dead and another hurt after a car crash in northeast Charlotte Friday night, according to CMPD.

The accident happened around 7:54 p.m. on Caldwell Road.

Police said they responded to a two-car crash call for service and arrived to find Sandra Medina Gama, 32, unresponsive inside a Volkswagen Passat.

The Volkswagen had damage on its left side.

The other car was an Audi A6 and the driver had a minor injury.

MEDIC pronounced Gama dead at the scene and transported the driver of the Audi to Atrium Health Center University.

No one else was involved in the accident.

CMPD investigated the incident and found that Gama was traveling southwest on Caldwell Road and entered the left-hand curve at a fast speed. Gama’s car traveled off the roadway to the right and she overcorrected to the left.

Gama overcorrected to the right and lost control of the car and crossed the center double yellow line.

The Volkswagen struck the driver side of the Audi, which was traveling northeast.

The investigation showed speed and failure to wear a seatbelt were contributing factors in the crash.

A toxicology report is pending.

The driver of the Audi was not impaired at the time of the crash and was wearing a seatbelt.
