ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A suspect has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man last week, according to court documents.

Jakari Quamaine Gardner, 21, was arrested Friday on first degree murder charges and is being held in the Rowan County Detention Center, inmate logs say.

Gardner was identified as a suspect by the China Grove Police Department after the shooting on Saturday, April 9.

Officers began investigating after responding to a shooting on Elm Street and Bostian Street before 7 p.m.

Police said they found 21-year-old Deontae Sanders Jr. in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the victim, but he died of his injuries at the hospital.

Police were searching for Gardner and a black BMW-X3 with the license tag JMP-7957 that may have been connected to him.

We are asking the China Grove Police Department for more information on Gardner’s arrest.

Gardner was denied bond and is expected in court for the first time on Monday.
