CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Olde Mecklenburg Brewery founder John Marrino has been tapped as the Charlotte Business Journal’s 16th annual Business Person of the Year.
Marrino is a pioneer in Charlotte’s growing craft-beer scene; OMB was the first brewery to open in the Queen City in March 2009.
Since then, OMB has built a following for its German-style brews, with the likes of Copper, Captain Jack and seasonal award-winning Mecktoberfest.
Marrino has invested more than $20 million into OMB and its facilities. Its workforce has grown from three employees — including himself— to 150, currently.
Another $10 million project is looming — but the brewery’s growth has not been without challenges.
