Officials: Columbia plane crash kills pilot

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A small plane crashed in South Carolina Saturday morning, officials said.

The plane's pilot, Bob Russell Jr., died when the single-engine plane crashed into a pond in west Columbia.

Russell was the co-founder of one of the largest real estate companies in South Carolina and was the only person on board.

According to officials, Russell was en route to Asheville when he crashed about 2 miles from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. He reported a mechanical problem.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
