ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — There are more problems for the Lanesboro Correctional Institution after authorities said an officer was slashed by an inmate.

Officials said the officer suffered a serious cut to the face that required more than 40 stitches.

Investigators said the corrections officer was removing Marcus Alston's restraints Monday afternoon to give him recreational time.

They said that's when Alston cut the officer with a bladed weapon.

Alston is serving a minimum 35-year sentence after raping a woman in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

He now faces charges for assault and is currently separated from the prison population.

Channel 9 has followed the problems that have plagued the Anson County prison.

Just last month, the administrator was stabbed in the prison recreation yard.

Federal officials are investigating whether a former supervisor helped hide inmates' homemade weapons.

Agents also took control of the prison this summer because they believed inmates were using smuggled phones to plan attacks from inside.

The Polkton Police Department and state prison officials are investigating the incident to see how the inmate got hold of the weapon.
