GREENSBORO, N.C. — A hand-to-hand struggle during an arrest attempt and then an exchange of gunfire left a suspect dead and a Greensboro police officer wounded, authorities said Saturday.

Carlos Keith Blackman, 25, died late Friday from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Officer J.R. LaBarre was released early Saturday after hospital treatment for a single gunshot in his upper torso, police said.

Officer L.S. Garrison and the car's driver weren't injured.

Blackman was a passenger in a car pulled over by LaBarre and Garrison on Friday afternoon and he ran away from the traffic stop, Greensboro Police spokeswoman Susan Danielsen said in a written statement. The red Chevrolet Impala matched information provided by a tipster reporting drug activity, Danielsen said in an email to The Associated Press.

LaBarre chased and caught Blackman, and according to audio and partial video from the officer's body camera the two struggled on the ground before Blackman escaped and started to run again, police said.

Gunshots erupted. Police did not say who fired first or how many times Blackman was shot.
