According to the sheriff’s office, the shooting happened close to 4 a.m. in York near Highway 321.
Deputies began their investigation on Alexander Love Highway and blocked off the area from Lincoln Road to Highway 321 for hours.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said on Monday that it started when an officer with the York Police Department started a traffic stop that turned into a vehicle chase. YCSO deputies got involved during the chase and found the person involved, who had “barricaded himself inside his vehicle along Alexander Love Highway.”
SLED says the YCSO SWAT team responded and negotiated with the person, but he was shot.
YCSO says no deputies were hurt.
After the early morning violence, veteran crime reporter, Glenn Counts, went to the area to speak with concerned residents. They told Counts, that situations like this just don’t happen here.
“Well to be honest I was taken aback, a lot of times this doesn’t happen around here so you know an officer shooting someone is rare,” Erik Graves, a resident, said.
Just after 8 p.m., YCSO identified the victim as 62-year-old, Charlie Baker, from Clover.
“It was a little bit disturbing, this area is usually quiet, it’s a good area where we live around and safe for the kids of course, so a shooting of that sort is of course concerning,” Monica Burton, another resident, said.
The sheriff’s office has not identified the officer in the shooting.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) will be investigating the shooting.
