CHARLOTTE — Police have identified an armed man who was shot and killed by police on Friday night at a Walmart in east Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the shooting happened at around 5:50 p.m. at the Walmart on Albemarle Road near Circumferential Road.

A Walmart security guard called CMPD to tell them someone with a gun was at the store. The security guard told police that the armed man would shoot officers if they responded.

CMPD said officers got to the scene and the armed man, 33-year-old Derrell Lamar Raney, pointed a gun at them. Two officers fired their weapons, hitting Raney, according to CMPD.
Raney was taken to a hospital where he died. No officers were injured, CMPD said. The security guard was also not hurt.
A gun was recovered at the scene, CMPD said.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Officers James Longworth and Micah Edmunds. CMPD hired Longworth in June 2018 and Edmunds in June 2016.
Channel 9 crews could see crime scene tape roping off the Walmart parking lot.
Authorities are reviewing video from security footage and body cameras, and no further information has been released.
The SBI is investigating the shooting.
