Off-duty officer assaulted in Wendy's parking lot trying to help beating victim

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said an off-duty Stallings police officer was knocked unconscious Sunday while trying to help a beating victim.

It happened around 3 p.m. in the parking lot of a Wendy's restaurant located at 7920 Cambridge Commons Drive in the Hickory Grove area.

Police said it started when two men in a white Lexus sped through the parking lot and nearly hit another car with a man and his wife inside.

All four got out of their vehicles and the two men then assaulted the male victim, leaving him with broken bones. The man's wife tried to take a picture of the suspects' vehicle, at which they turned on her.

An off-duty Stallings Police Department sergeant tried to help, and he was beaten unconscious.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or who has information about this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
