Snow wrote that he was running down the street in pajamas trying to find his puppy, Riley, when the deputy, whose name he couldn't remember, stopped to help.
When Snow finally found Riley, he said she had fallen through a rotted plank into a 10-feet deep well.
He said she was standing on her hind legs with water up to her neck, jumping and clawing, but his family couldn't reach her.
That's when the deputy came to the rescue.
Snow said his dad held the deputy's legs and lowered him into the well, allowing the deputy to pull the puppy to safety.
Riley was rushed to the veterinary hospital where she was treated for exhaustion, head trauma and infection.
Vets at the hospital said it was a miracle that Riley survived and the Snow family agreed while praising the deputy for his help.
Snow wrote the sheriff's office to not only thank the deputy but to get his name.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office replied to the boy's letter with a gracious note that identified the deputy as B. Heath.
