MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — As many people prepare to travel Interstate 77 for this holiday, some may take advantage of the toll lanes finally being open.
Since June, there have been a thousand crashes in the I-77 toll construction zone. In 2018, there were 11 percent more crashes during the same time period.
According to NCDOT, 14 people have died in crashed since the toll lane project began four years ago. That’s out of an estimated 145 million cars that have traveled through the area during that time.
>>> In the video at the top of the page, Channel 9′s Blaine Tolison spoke to drivers who said they’ve noticed a change, but critics said the numbers don’t tell the whole story.
