ROCK HILL, S.C. — A last-second field goal on Saturday night was the final touch to the Northwestern High School football team’s undefeated season earning them a state championship.
It was the Trojan’s first state championship game since 2015.
Northwestern made it to the championship game in 2022 but did not secure a win.
The team, mostly made up of seniors, returned last weekend to face off against Irmo with a passion to redeem themselves.
“I feel like everybody knew what they needed to do,” said wide receiver Jayden Nichols, Northwestern High School. “It was our senior year and we felt like we had to win. We had to.”
Northwestern finished its undefeated season with a 34-31 victory over Irmo in the SCHSL Class 5A Division II championship at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
At 5 p.m., what the program means for the players and coaches.
