HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Police have been called out to North Mecklenburg High School 48 times this school year for reports of drugs and thefts, as well as four assaults.

A teacher was reportedly emotionally scarred after an assault in February.

The teachers, who are on edge, want their classrooms safer.

There have been two cases of students fighting.

A report was filed indicating that one girl said she was forced to fondle a boy.

On March 7, a teacher fell trying to de-escalate a situation between students.

"Teachers do not feel safe," said Judy Kidd, head of the Charlotte Teachers Association.

She's talked to teachers who want to see students disciplined more often to cut down on violence.

"They need to be held accountable for their actions and they're not,” Kidd said. “That's the bottom line."

Parents agree and said it’s part of their job to work with schools to make sure their kids are behaving.

“We want our kids to go to school to learn,” parent Kristin Clifton said.

Kidd said she's contacted leaders, asking them to address teachers concerns

The injured teacher wants to see changes or she may not return to the classroom.

“She feels traumatized and very reluctant to return to work under the conditions that exist now,” Kidd said.

District leaders are addressing the issue, an official said.
