CHARLOTTE — My’asia Greathouse has her dress and shoes ready for prom on May 19. She even has hair and makeup appointments booked, but as of right now she doesn’t have a ticket to her own senior prom.
“What girl doesn’t want to go to their senior prom? I was at school really about to cry,” said Greathouse.
North Mecklenburg High School told My’asia and dozens of other students this week that prom was sold out.
The situation is so bad that students have resorted to scalping tickets to the prom scheduled for next Saturday.
Greathouse says she’s heard there’s a $120 asking price for a $60 ticket.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools told us:
“The school used the same venue last year and did not have a sellout, they anticipated the approximate number of attendees again this year.”
North Mecklenburg High School signed a contract for 500 guests with the Hilton at University Place, but that's not enough space for all the seniors, juniors, and their guests who have asked to attend.
"That's over 1000 people. Why is the venue for 500?" Greathouse said.
CMS told Channel 9 it’s working to resolve the ticket shortage saying:
“...school leadership is working on a plan to increase tickets, by reducing the number of staff that planned to attend.”
Parents are also calling for action to resolve this.
“They need to fix it. They need to fix it. These kids need to go to their prom,” said Mom Dee Shepard.
CMS says the tickets were on sale for two months. The students without prom tickets say they attempted to buy before the deadline and insist there was no warning the event was close to selling out.
