RALEIGH.N.C. — A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper used his car to block a wrong-way driver on an exit ramp on Interstate 40, authorities said.
News outlets report the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office called the patrol shortly after midnight Friday to help stop a driver who was speeding more than 100 mph.
The patrol said that in order to stop the driver being pursued, State Trooper Cody Thao parked his car at the top of the ramp near Rock Quarry Road to stop him from driving into oncoming traffic on the interstate.
Patrol Sgt. Marcus Bethea said troopers don’t train for such situations. Bethea said Thao reacted in the moment and made the decision to use his vehicle, and ultimately himself, to stop the driver and prevent someone from being hurt and killed.
Although he was inside the vehicle, Thao was not hurt, officials said.
Authorities charged Joshua Ray Bibey, 26, of Raleigh was charged with driving while impaired. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
