RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina state trooper got more than he bargained for when he stopped to help a driver who flagged him down in the middle of a busy street.
The driver’s daughter was in labor and needed help.
Sgt. W.C. Johnson called for assistance but, with no time to spare, grabbed a set of gloves and got into position to deliver the baby.
He said during the delivery process, he kept thinking back to when his own child was born and what the doctor was doing as well as what they told him to do in the delivery room.
Three minutes later, the baby was born.
“I reached in and I picked the baby up and unwrapped the umbilical cord from around the baby's neck,” Johnson said.
Johnson oversees the area's accident reconstruction unit and said the situation was a nice change from what he’s used to seeing.
"Seeing death all the time, to see a birth come into the world is very refreshing," he said.
The baby, named Achilles, weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces. He and his mother are both doing well.
