NORTH CAROLINA — 2022 was a historic year for visitor spending in North Carolina according data released by the department of commerce Friday.
After a few years where rural counties led visitor spending post-pandemic, North Carolina’s urban areas registered the largest gains in 2022.
According to the data, North Carolina recorded $33.3 billion in visitor spending.
Wake, Mecklenburg, and Durham counties were among the most profitable counties in visitor spending.
Mecklenburg County received $5.3 billion in traveler expenditures to lead all counties.
Mecklenburg also had the largest number of direct tourism employees, an increase of 18% from 2021.
