CHARLOTTE — A unique local group is introducing preschool students who speak Spanish to the importance of science, technology, engineering and math.
Channel 9 got a behind-the-scenes look Thursday at Project Scientist at Charlotte Bilingual Preschool in the Hickory Grove neighborhood. Students and parents were able to do hands-on learning together.

“It’s awesome not only because it’s early, because families are part of it. So the child is interacting with the materials and engaged, but the family is present too,” said Igmaliana Austin with Charlotte Bilingual Preschool. “The most important thing is it’s in their language. That is so valuable.”
Students were also introduced to a Spanish-speaking role model who works in STEM.
Project Scientist is a national nonprofit that has a goal of igniting girls’ interest in STEM. Thursday’s class was part of Project Scientist’s initiative to create Spanish-language summer and after-school STEM programs for dual-language schools across the country.
The program is expanding to Mexico this fall.
