CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Residents and businesses in NoDa have noticed a big difference since 36th Street and the light rail station opened last year.
While the area on one side of the light rail has seen a lot of growth, we’re starting to see more development on a stretch of 36th near Tryon Street.

“Now that it’s opened up, more people have access to Smelly Cat. Especially with the opening light rail, it has really brought in a huge influx of things. When I check sales, it’s a steady increase from the previous years,” said Karyn Bedford, general manager of Smelly Cat.
Bedford said it was the growth they were waiting for. Sales for many businesses dropped during construction at 36th Street.
Construction delays disconnected north Charlotte from NoDa for four years. It finally reopened last fall.
