CHARLOTTE — Animal Care and Control in Charlotte is asking for public help after more than 80 dogs arrived at the shelter in two days.
Between March 1 and March 3, CMPD says 81 dogs entered the shelter; 39 of them were returning from foster homes.
Currently, the shelter has no open kennels for these dogs due to the fact that the 46 kennels are under renovation.
According to Animal Care and Control’s Communication Director, Melissa Knicely, those renovations should be finished sooner rather than later.
“They’ve already basically demoed everything, and now everything is kind of being built, so that’s good news,” Knicely said.

For those who are not sure about adding a furry friend to the family, Knicely recommends a ‘staycation, which has turned out to be a great help to the overcrowded shelter.
“If you don’t have any animals and you’re like, ‘Oh, I eventually think I would like to adopt a cat or a dog’, then this is always a good way to test the waters a little bit and get one, and you could always start with a staycation,” she said.
A portion of the dogs surrendered to the shelter were found throughout the county, Knicely says. Before taking the animal directly to the shelter or dialing 311 for Animal Care and Control Officers, take it to one of the county’s 16 microchip locations. Veterinarians or other staff can use the microchip to collect the owner’s information and reunite them with their lost pets.
