CHARLOTTE — No one was hurt when a shot was fired inside a Walmart in west Charlotte Sunday afternoon, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Officers said they responded to Wilkinson Boulevard after receiving reports about an assault with a deadly weapon.

The store was evacuated and no one was hit by gunfire, according to police.

Authorities said a person of interest is in custody and that they are not searching for any other suspects.

Channel 9 reporter Glenn Counts spoke with a customer who was inside the store when the shot was fired.

“It was definitely panic. And also it was a lot of people as well,” said the customer, who did not want to be identified. “I was in the line to purchase my merchandise at the time when it happened. And I heard the shot. Next thing I know, I just seen everybody running from everywhere every direction.”

The customer said the one thing that scared her was the fact that she was with her niece, who suffers from hearing issues.

“She’s got hearing issues. And when it happened, she was in front of me, and I couldn’t see her. And all of a sudden, I kept hollering her name. And I couldn’t find her till I got out the door. And, like I said, I was really scared,” the customer said.

Walmart announced that the Wilkinson Boulevard location will be closed for the rest of Sunday evening after sending employees home for the night. The store will reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday.

The investigation into this incident is active and ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
