CHARLOTTE — Bullets pierced through a northwest Charlotte home nearly hitting children inside.

The family said they are shaken up and won’t sleep inside the house in the Moores Chapel Village neighborhood.

Phylecia John carefully chose Moores Chapel Village for her family’s dream home.

“I’ve thought to move there because it’s a new neighborhood and I thought it was safe for me and my child to be in,” John said.

The sense of security was lost on Jan. 10.

“I was up praying, watching TV, and between 1:50 a.m. and 2 a.m. I heard gunshots come into my house,” she said. “Of course, I was startled. I jumped up.”

John told Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers that multiple rounds struck her home.

The gunfire left bullet holes near the front door, above the front window, and overhead on the front porch.

John said one round went through the hallway wall leading to her nine-year-old daughter’s room.

Another one hit the bedroom where her 12-year-old stepson was sleeping.

“He was still asleep unaware of what was going on until he woke up and heard the commotion,” John said.

The homeowner said she thinks her family was mistakenly targeted.

“My first thought was, ‘Clearly, they have the wrong home,’” she said. “But you know, you just kind of lose all faith in humanity when things like this happen to good people.”

The family is now on edge.

“Even going back to the house brings a sense of anxiety that I don’t want to feel. So we have not been staying in the house,” John said.

John’s priority is finding answers and her sense of security.

“I don’t think I’ll ever feel safe again,” she said. “I will never feel safe again in that house.”

Things will never be the same, she said.

“It’s just it’s a nightmare, to say the least,” John said.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the investigation is active and ongoing.
