CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have released body camera video from officers who shot and killed an armed man outside a Walmart in east Charlotte in November 2021.
Police responded to the Walmart on Albemarle Road, near Circumferential Road, at around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 5, after a store security guard called CMPD. The security guard said an armed man was at the store and would shoot officers if they responded.

Once police got to the scene, a man identified as Derrell Raney, 33, pointed a gun at them. Two officers then fired their weapons, hitting Raney, CMPD said.
Raney was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
No police officers were hurt in the shooting. The officers involved were identified as Officers James Longworth and Micah Edmunds.
A Superior Court Judge has granted a petition for the release of body-worn camera videos associated with this incident.
The newly released body camera video shows officers arriving at the scene and the moments leading up to the deadly shooting.

The first clip in the released footage shows Longworth and Edmunds arrive at the Walmart and talk to the security guard who had called police earlier. The guard then points officers to Raney, who can be seen sitting in the grass. In the video, it appears Raney has a backpack in his lap.
As the officers walk toward him, they can be heard asking Raney to show his hands, before they fire their weapons. Channel 9 counted the officers fired at least eight shots.
In the video, the officers can be seen handcuffing Raney and then helping give him medical aide, but he died from his injuries.
