New warming shelter opens in Gastonia

GASTONIA, N.C. — A new shelter is open in Gastonia to keep people warm if they have nowhere to stay.

The shelter is in the Salvation Army Center of Hope on South Broad Street.

It will open from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. on nights when temperatures are expected to fall to 32 degrees or below.

The city and Gaston County teamed up for the shelter because they realized the growing need to help those without a home.

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve had somewhere between 300 and 325 people that are unhoused individuals,” said Adam Gaub, the Gaston County communications director. “When they did the count this year, it was almost 500. So we know there’s a growing number of people in need of services like this.

The city and county each donated $5,000 in this partnership.
