CHARLOTTE, N.C. — New video obtained Friday by Channel 9 shows the intense brawl between students at Harding University High School Thursday. The fight put a 15-year old student in handcuffs and CMPD school resource officer J. Flowers under investigation.
This comes after police say three teens robbed a classmate with a BB gun inside the halls of a Mint Hill high school on Monday. On Tuesday, a middle school student was accused of pulling a knife on another student during class at McClintock Middle School. And Wednesday, police say a West Mecklenburg High School student ran into the school after being shot at during an attempted robbery near campus.
President of the Classroom Teachers Association of North Carolina, Judy Kidd, says these incidents happen far too often, putting everyone, including teachers, in dangerous situations.
"They need to address this situation before they are addressing someone getting severely injured," she said.
One parent of a Harding University High student Channel 9 spoke with says she wants to see beefed-up security at school.
"It's difficult, because it seems like the same problem keeps happening over and over again," said the parent.
Willie Lee has a ninth-grader at Harding High, and he says not only is he concerned for student safety but how this could impact their education.
"It might deter some students from even wanting to come to school for the fear of what might happen today," said Lee.
Kidd says she thinks the whole community needs to speak up.
"Be active because I think the time to sit back and keep your mouth shut has long passed," said Kidd.
Channel 9 contacted Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools on Friday for more information on Thursday's fight and for comment on the entire week of violent events. CMS declined to comment.
