CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Within the next couple of years, longtime South End brewery staple Sycamore Brewing Co. will move into a new tower next door, anchoring the retail portion of an upcoming office project.
Travis Garland, director of leasing at Atlanta developer Portman Holdings, said Wednesday that the firm is under contract on Sycamore's current property, at 2161 Hawkins St. Sycamore will stay put while Portman's building, at 2151 Hawkins St., is under construction, then move into part of the retail space after the tower delivers in 2021.

Once 2151 Hawkins is finished, Portman plans to break ground on a second building, likely containing about 250,000 square feet of office and retail space, at Sycamore's current site.
2151 Hawkins — a 16-story, 280,000-square-foot building — is expected to break ground in December or January, with an expected delivery in the summer 2021. Right now, plans for 2161 Hawkins are preliminary but Garland said his firm feels confident in the submarket's office potential to tee up a second tower, particularly since the properties front the Charlotte Rail Trail.

"We view (it) through the lens of Atlanta and seeing what the BeltLine's done — that beachfront, if you will," Garland said.
