New technology could help warn of flooding in Charlotte neighborhoods

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Boxes being installed near streams and creeks in Mecklenburg County could help protect more people from floodwaters.

Homeland Security has asked Mecklenburg County Stormwater officials to test the new technology to see how it measures up against devices that are much more expensive.

The new rain gauges cost only about $1,000, while the current gauges can cost $20,000 each.
