MECKLENBURG, N.C. — New signs along the Interstate 77 toll lanes are warning drivers they’re being watched by cameras. They’re meant to crack down on drivers pretending to be carpooling.
I-77 Mobility Partners said the technology will take a picture of a car to determine how many people are in it. The images will then be compared to the setting on the car’s transponder.

“I think there (are) always going to be issues with cameras and how clear the cameras are. Whether there was a third person or not a third person, I think the cost to monitor that could be quite expensive,” said driver Gary Garcia.
Troopers said they will still be on the interstate looking for drivers who are violating traffic laws alongside the cameras.
