CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mayor Vi Lyles loves a good farmers market find. Her favorites are heirloom tomatoes and fresh corn, but she said what she loves the most about uptown’s market near First Baptist Church is its mission.
“Our city is changing and we have got to accommodate everyone,” she said.
The market is focused on addressing food insecurity. It accepts SNAP/EBT, and participates in the double bucks program, allowing people to double their dollars.
Visitors also can donate to the Community Table Fund. Those contributions are used to purchase produce that is donated to areas that need it most, such as Roof Above.
“When you feed a family with kids and their elders, you know we will be a healthier city,” Lyles said.
Lyles and other community leaders were on hand Saturday morning for the unveiling of the city’s newest mural. The two-story piece of art was created by local artist Curtis King. It is meant to promote community and nutritious food. Officials hope people are inspired by the 20-by-60-foot mural, and continue to support the farmers market.
“What he is doing is showcasing all of the opportunities we have so people have good food to eat and also a little bit of history to go with it,” Lyles said.
