OUTER BANKS, N.C. — A new island on the Outer Banks is attracting tourists but officials have a warning for them.
Shelly Island is a mile-long sandbar that opened up near Cape Hatteras.
Tourists can get there from Cape Point.

Officials are warning that visiting the island may be dangerous because of the strong currents, riptides and shells.
They recommend using the buddy system when venturing to Shelly Island.
