New documentary casts doubt on murder of Michael Jordan’s father

LUMBERTON, N.C. — A new documentary is casting doubt about one of the men convicted of killing Michael Jordan’s father.

WTVD reported James Jordan was shot and killed on July 23, 1993 -- the height of his son’s international stardom as a professional basketball player.

Daniel Green and Larry Demery, who were childhood friends, were arrested. The pair said they found Jordan sleeping in his Lexus on the side of Highway 74 near Lumberton.

According to WTVD, Demery testified during the trial that they were going to tie Jordan up and steal his Lexus but Green shot and killed him.

Green has denied that claim.

Demery and Green were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, but Demery was approved for parole and could be released as soon as 2023.

The five-part series called “Moment of Truth” airs on IMDBTV starting Friday, April 2, and it will re-examine all the evidence in the case.

WTVD reported the series will look at rarely seen crime scene photos, never-before-heard audio tapes from the trial and interviews with key players.

“This is the first time that in many ways, audiences will be able to see the complete story surrounding this murder,” producer Matthew Perniciaro said.

In an exclusive preview given to ABC News, Green again said he did not kill Jordan. He said he got involved to help protect his friend.

“I didn’t kill James Jordan,” Green said. “I’m innocent. I’m innocent of murder.”
