New digital campus paving the way for tech firms to transform Lancaster County

INDIAN LAND, S.C. — Each year, thousands of jobs are added to the booming Indian Land area but they're not the kinds of careers many locals are used to, and the offices the new workers have are wildly different from the norm.

Walking into CompuCom, the first thing that catches your eye is a three-story video wall. It allows employees to post tweets and collaborate with others.

The new digital campus in Indian Land may have a motto similar to the sentiments of Ken Jackowitz, what chief products officer:

"If you're sitting at your desk all day, you're doing it wrong."

In fact, what you normally think of as a desk is hard to find around CompuCom.
Instead, you can sit almost anywhere you want -- from cubicles to booths or in something that feels like a first-class airline seat, in first class.

"We don't just hire millennials. We do hire people my age," Jackowitz said.

However, the entire complex certainly has a young feel with a relaxed, spacious atmosphere.

The building has video games, a gym and a health center.
It's completely open, with no corner office for the boss. The light also varies throughout the day to mimic natural light.

The location of CompuCom is no fluke. Indian Land is becoming a hub for tech firms.

The tech job boom is certainly not slowing down. Red Ventures, the county's biggest employer, is expanding from 2,000 to 3,000 workers.

Movement Mortgage has 800 employees and will grow to 1,300 employees and will have a second building.

CompuCom plans to grow from 1,500 to 3,500 workers over the next seven years.

The workforce is not only diverse by age but by skill set. Degrees range from computer science fields to marketing and business fields.

Jamie Gilbert, Lancaster County economic development director, said these companies are quickly changing the image of the county.

"It's all about image.
There's a Silicon Valley attitude there," Gilbert said. "I think we were already on the map, but this is huge."
