New CaroMont Health hospital driving more development in Gaston County

BELMONT, N.C. — CaroMont Health’s $300 million investment in a Belmont medical complex is changing much more than the health-care landscape. It’s driving eastern Gaston County’s development pattern in a new direction.

As the hospital moves closer to a summer 2024 opening, it is surrounded by construction of new apartments, medical offices and other commercial space. It’s even helped spark a $100 million expansion of Belmont Abbey College.

That’s just the start.

Evidence of the impact can be seen in the emergence of an area just across N.C. Highway 273 from the hospital site and Belmont Abbey. Mount Holly has dubbed the area the South Gateway district and pitched it for commercial development for 15-plus years.

The hospital’s arrival turned a marketing message into a viable draw for development.
