New business coming to Hickory lot famous for 2002 sinkhole

HICKORY, N.C. — A company is now building on the lot in Hickory made famous more than two decades ago when a sinkhole swallowed up a corvette.

It happened in 2002 in the parking lot of Buffalo’s Southwest Cafe.

Over the years, the storm drainage line under the property got damaged, causing flooding along Highway 70.

In June of 2023, Hickory’s mayor says Rims USA purchased the property for a half million dollars after repairs were made.

The contract states that the city will not maintain the drainage line that runs under the property.

This is a developing story. Check wsoctv.com for updates.
