New 472 area code being implemented in North Carolina

Cell Phones: What you need to know

NORTH CAROLINA — The days are numbered for phone numbers beginning with 910 -- a new area code is being implemented in southeast North Carolina soon.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission says the new area code, 472, will be used for the 910 calling area, which serves cities like Fayetteville, Jacksonville, Wilmington, and Fort Bragg.

The new area code will officially launch once the last of the 910 phone numbers is given out.

“Beginning October 7, 2022, customers in the 910 area code overlay region may be assigned a number in the new 472 area code when they request new service or an additional line,” the NCUC said in a statement.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator, which is the group that oversees phone number distribution for most of the continent, says the remaining supply of 910 area code numbers is estimated to be exhausted in the first quarter of 2023. The new area code had to be set up ahead of time to “support future demands in the region.”

According to the NCUC, people who get the 472 area code will be required to dial the area code and phone number for all local calls.
