New $44 million rec center debuts in Lake Norman area

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Don’t let the bland name fool you: The Northern Regional Recreation Center opening next week is already a hit. Hundreds of residents have come in for preview tours of the $44 million center in Cornelius — and at least 200 have signed up for monthly memberships ranging from $22 to $65.

The 86,000-square-foot center features two indoor pools, upstairs and downstairs fitness areas, indoor courts for basketball, pickleball and volleyball, group exercise studios, meetings areas and child care, among other things. It’s part of the Mecklenburg County park and recreation department’s strategy of building recreational hubs in each quadrant: east, west, north, and south.

CBJ participated in a media tour this week that included sneak peeks at cardio and fitness equipment, a towering indoor-outdoor water slide, barre, and kickboxing set-ups, and more.
