Neighbors claim ADT impostor trying to get in their homes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is going around neighborhoods, pretending to be with the big home alarm company ADT inc., trying to get inside people's homes.

Residents said it's happening in neighborhoods in northeast Charlotte where I-485 and I-85 meet, near Concord.

"I had just got home, pulled into my garage and then my doorbell rang," Mallard Lake resident Sheri White said.  "So I open the door and it's a guy, a tall, white, heavyset guy."

White told Action 9 the man had a little ADT patch on his clothes that didn't look authentic.  She said the man didn't have an ADT vehicle either.  She said he claimed he was at her house to retrieve ADT equipment, which she does not have.

"It was just weird," she said.  She said she refused to let him in and he went away quietly.

White warned her neighbors on the social media site Nextdoor, and Action 9 found a similar post on the page.

A Chowning Tavern resident said in a post that an ADT impostor came to her home too.  The two neighborhoods are about 2 miles apart.

Action 9 made sure police are aware as well.

ADT and CPI Security Systems sent Action 9 checklists so you know what real sales representatives do and don't do.

ADT:

Does do:

•    Identify ourselves and say that we are with ADT Security.

•    Show a photo ID badge with an ADT logo.

•    Provide a professional business card with name, cellphone, email and local corporate office address.

•    Have NC or SC Alarm Board license.

•    An employee ID number can be provided by representative, and the customer can call corporate ADT at 1800-ADT-ASAP to confirm it.

Does not do:

•    A representative at the door will not ask to retrieve any existing security equipment in the home. That is only done by customer request for a service call to remove equipment.

•    Another red flag would be if someone says, "We recently bought ADT and are here to upgrade your service."

CPI:

Does do:

•    Identify that we are with CPI Security.

•    Wear CPI-branded apparel.

•    Show a photo ID badge with a CPI logo.

•    Have NC or SC Alarm Board license.

•    An employee ID number can be provided by the security consultant, and the customer can go

here

to verify team members or call corporate CPI at 800-948-7133.

Does not do:

•    A representative would not ask to retrieve any existing security equipment in the home. This would be scheduled with the customer in advance.

•    Someone saying their company recently bought CPI and they are there to upgrade your service.
