Nearly 2,000 gallons of wastewater spills into Reedy Creek in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Almost 2,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed near an east Charlotte neighborhood and ended up reaching Reedy Creek, according to Charlotte Water on Wednesday.

Charlotte Water says the wastewater flooded over on Linda Lake Drive, which is near East W.T. Harris Boulevard. The wastewater overflowed because of a “blockage of grease and tree roots.”

The wastewater ended up trickling over a mile away to Reedy Creek, according to Charlotte Water.

The utility service says residents can help prevent wastewater overflows by paying attention to what gets put down the drain. Things like “paper towels, wipes, hair, cotton swabs, feminine products, dental floss, coffee grounds, and excess food” should be thrown in the trash, and expired oils and grease should be taken to a full-service recycling center.

The city didn’t say that neighbors need to do anything to treat their water at home. No river closures were announced in connection with the spill.
