CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — One person is dead after a late-night crash on Friday in Catawba County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night on N.C. 18 near Willis Road and involved a 1999 Cadillac Eldorado.
NCSHP said the Cadillac was heading north on N.C. 18 when it was driven off the side of the road and overturned several times. The driver of the Cadillac, 29-year-old Vincent Anthony Skidmore from Shelby, died from his injuries at the scene.
Troopers said a passenger was taken by EMS to UNC Health Blue Ridge in Morganton to treat non-life-threatening injuries.
NCSHP said that Skidmore was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened and that speeding coupled with reckless driving led to the crash. NC 18 was closed for three hours while troopers investigated.
